5 Ways to Prevent Winter Hair Static

5 Ways to Prevent Winter Hair Static 1

Hot chocolate. Sledding. Cozy socks. There are many reasons to enjoy winter. However, hair static is not one of them. Drops in temperature and dry air will cause negatively charged electrons to bounce off your hair and leave the locks with positive charges that resist each other.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways to prevent winter hair static so that you can happily make it through the winter months.

1. Swipe your hair with an anti-static dryer sheet.

Dryer sheets can significantly reduce hair static. Keep a package of dryer sheets in your bathroom and run one over your hair in the morning. You can also line your brush drawer and put one inside your pillowcase to help stop static.

2. Rub lotion in your hair.

Using a heavy product like lotion on your hair might sound unappealing, especially if you have fine type hair. However, rubbing lotion on the ends of your strands will help prevent static and avoid greasiness. Just put a dime-sized amount in your hands and gently grab the ends of your hair.

3. Brush with a metal comb.

Using a plastic brush or comb will make the static worse.  So what is a woman to do? We recommend using metal instead of plastic. Metal combs reduce static by causing the electric charges of your hair to discharge. Furthermore, combs with wider teeth produce less static than combs with teeth that are close together.

4. Spritz on hair oil.

Did you know that you can use hair oil for different hair and skin related issues, and to control static? While it may seem counterintuitive to use oil on your hair, it actually replaces essential moisture that gets reduced during the cleaning and styling process.  Rub five to six drops of oil in your hands and run it through your hair when it is slightly damp so the dry air does not ruin your hair.

5. Use an ionic hair dryer.

In addition to reducing static by neutralizing the electric charge that creates it in the first place, this type of blow dryer dries your hair faster. For busy women, this is a bonus.

Hopefully, these tips help you enjoy the rest of this winter season, especially when it comes to your haircare routine.
