How to Save Money on Laundry

How to Save Money on Laundry 1

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, the average family of four does about 400 loads of laundry per year. When you think about the cost of water, detergent, and electric drying, a simple household chore can get expensive.

Read on to learn about ways to decrease your cost per a load of laundry.

  • Use cold water. Your clothes get just as clean in cold water as hot since it is the agitation of the washer that helps loosen dirt. Also, using cold water saves money because it is not draining your hot water tank.
  • Do full loads. Waiting until you have a full load of laundry is most efficient. If you must do a smaller amount, be sure to set the washing machine setting to “low/small.”
  • Dilute your fabric softener. If you like to use fabric softener, try diluting it at a 2:1 ratio to get twice the amount. You will save money and likely will not notice the difference.
  • Use the shortest wash cycle. The “heavy” or “heavy duty” cycle on your washing machine will not necessarily get your clothes cleaner. However, it will use a lot more energy and thus cost more per load. It is best to treat stubborn stains directly before putting clothes into the washer.
  • Soak for a deeper clean. If you have items that are filthy, you can do a “heavy duty” type cycle without using a heavy duty amount of extra electricity. Only fill the machine as normal, let it agitate for a few minutes, and then stop the washer and let clothes soak a while before turning the machine back on to continue its cycle.
  • Clean the lint filter. Be sure to clean the lint filter every time you use the dryer. This makes it work more efficiently, and it is also safer. Dryer lint is highly flammable. Therefore, removing it will help prevent fires.

Finding ways to reduce the costs of doing laundry is beneficial to lowering overall household expenses. Alternatives such as using cold water, washing full loads of clothes, and using a shorter wash cycle are not only ways to maintain clean clothes. However, will help you to save money.
