Homemade Saline Solution

Saline solution is easy to make at home using common, affordable ingredients! The best part is, you probably won't even need to make trip to the store!

Homemade Saline Solution

Making your own saline solution is simple and cost-effective. In fact, there's a good chance you have all the ingredients on hand already! This homemade version is quick to whip up and can help you stick to your budget and avoid a trip to the store.

What is saline solution?

Saline solution is just a mixture of salt and water. It is widely available at pharmacies and is an excellent multipurpose addition to any medicine cabinet. Whether you're unblocking stuffy noses, cleaning wounds, soothing itchy eyes, or just getting a headstart on hay fever season, saline solution is a great, gentle choice.

How to make a DIY saline solution

The ingredients of saline solution are simple and easy to find. All you need is salt and water. Baking soda is also an ingredient. It isn't strictly necessary, but it helps to stop saline solution from burning your eyes and nose.

What kind of water should I use?

You can use either distilled water or tap water which you have boiled and cooled. It's really important that you boil the tap water to sterilize it before you use it. Distilled water is already sterile and doesn't need any sort of treatment. The good news is, its widely available and you can find it at most pharmacies.

A simple saline solution recipe

Making saline solution is so simple. This recipe makes around a cup of saline solution, but if you need more, it's easy to scale up.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of water (distilled or boiled and cooled)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda (optional)

Simply mix all the ingredients until they are well combined. Homemade saline solution can be stored in a closed, sterilized container at room temperature for 3 days.

What can I use saline solution for?

Saline solution has a wide variety of uses and making your own works out so much cheaper than buying it at the store. Here are some things it's most commonly used for:
  • Rinsing sinuses. Saline can help soothe a blocked nose, get you through hay fever season, and loosen mucous for little ones.
  • Itchy eyes. Saline solution can help soothe itchy eyes during allergy season.
  • Sore throats. Gargling with saline solution can help soothe and heal some sore throats. Feel a sore throat starting? A good gargle with saline solution could put a stop to it!
  • Wounds and piercings. Healthcare professionals might recommend saline solution to clean certain wounds. It's sterile and doesn't burn which makes it a great, budget-friendly option for day-to-day cuts and scrapes.

Remember, it's always a good idea to check with your healthcare provider before you try new home remedies. They usually have a good picture of your overall health and can recommend options that are best for you.
